OG Biowar started in 2011 with a simple question: could we make something better?
We were running a landscaping company and using a beneficial-microbe product that was expensive. Taking a closer look at the label, we noticed it listed 99% inert ingredients. That sparked a question: could we develop a more concentrated formula at a better value?
That question sent us down a six-month research rabbit hole—and eventually to an amazing microbiologist. We asked whether we could develop a custom formula together.
That formula became the first rendition of OG Biowar.
Our first batch was 60 kilograms. There was no fancy launch. We introduced it to friends on online growing forums and asked them to try it. Our first sales were wrapped in ziplock bags and labeled with Sharpie.
Growers loved the results, told other growers, and the business grew through word of mouth.
But those forums did more than help us sell product. They helped shape it. Members would send over microbial species they had been researching and ask whether we could include them. We worked through those suggestions with our microbiologist, testing compatibility and adding new species as we saw fit.
OG Biowar grew out of that exchange: growers asking questions, a wizard of a microbiologist helping develop the formulas, and real feedback from people using the products.
We moved from the forums to eBay, improved the packaging, registered our products with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and eventually launched our own website.
Since 2011, the packaging has changed. The reason we started has not: to make a beneficial-microbe product we want to use ourselves, and share it with other growers.
Nature isn’t sterile. Your grow shouldn’t be either.
